Social Network Analysis (SNA) is a method for understanding and visually mapping social relationships, flows and connections within organisations. It is important for understanding cultural barriers and enablers in knowledge and innovation projects. An SNA can reveal:
- overt and covert social networks
- gaps and opportunities in the social networks (who should be connected but aren’t)
- nodes in the network
- potential communities of practice
Once an organisation gets an objective view of its social networks, it can then devise ways of harnessing these networks, eg, connecting networks and nodes to increase knowledge flows. SNA can be used to complement a knowledge audit exercise, and is a useful input to a KM Strategy exercise.
Straits Knowledge is a licensed SNA practitioner using the pioneering software InFlow developed by Valdis Krebs in the USA.
